At begin of the 60's Brigitte Deval started to model grotesque,
surrealistic figures heritage of the visionary and fantastic nordic
tradition. These first experiments recall the unsettling atmosphere of
Hoffman¹s tales and the ghastly visions of Hieronymus Bosch.
In time however her work evolves towards a more natural concept of the human
figure, towards a more sobre representation.
The image becomes more tranquil searching for light and perfect proportions;
harmony takes the place of exaggeration and excess.
The facial expression becomes the focal point of the whole, emanating
vitality to the figure, however nothing adoring or framing the figure is
neglected. The garments and accessories embellishing and placing the figure
in context are crafted with minute attention to detail without distracting
from the primacy of the facial features. This importance is not even
diminished when the eye of the observer is bedazzled by the splendor and
richness of the garnments and their perfect manufacture. After moments of
amazed fascination attention is swifthy drawn to the vital centre of the
figure: the face.
In the few essential lines of the features the soul is revealed or hidden,
depending upon how the creator perceives its psychology and intends to
interpret such.
More then 50 years of experience conducted along this path of fragile equilibrium have
produced a figure capable of synthesising interiority and exteriority,
ephemeralness and eternal, the soul¹s secrets and their revelation.
